Warsash to appear on Scottish Television 13 October 2008 |
Earlier this year Scottish Television (STV) filmed a number of segments at WMA with a group of Warsash students for a six-part programme about careers/life in the Merchant Navy. The seagoing footage was shot aboard BP, Carnival and Maersk ships.
The first part of the programme will air on Monday 13th October at 8pm on STV. It can then be seen straight afterwards on the programme's website - stv.tv/merchantnavy. The second and third parts will then be aired on subsequent Mondays, with a one-week break before the final three parts of the series.

Update to OPITO standards June 30 2008 |
FOET
As from 30/06/08, new OPITO requirements necessitate the addition of a First Aid refresher module in addition to all the existing FOET elements. As a consequence, the course duration will be extended by just over one hour to meet these changes.
FOET SM Supplementary Module
Following on from the above change, WMA will be offering the additional vertical escape chute training for delegates who wish to work elsewhere in the North Sea in accordance with the “Memorandum of Agreement on Basic Safety and Emergency Preparedness Training” [between Oil & Gas UK, OLF (Norway), NSOC-D (Denmark) and NOGEPA (Netherlands)] which came into effect on 1 November 2007 during the same working day as the FOET.
This will save delegates overnight expenses as the First Aid and Vertical Escape Chute modules were previously offered as a half day course following the FOET.
FOET SMA Supplementary Modules - Additional
WMA will continue to run the half day SMA course typically once in every three months however we will normally require a minimum of six delegate bookings to make this course viable. This course is for current holders of either the UK BOSIET or FOET certificate, wishing to work outside the UK North Sea sector that requires both the First Aid and Vertical Escape Chute modules.
BBC TV Breakfast show featuring WMA's Manned Models
|
Following on from the excellent feature on BBC TV Breakfast Warsash has gone global. The model manned lake with its scaled down replicas of tankers, ferries and tugs has caught the imagination of the world’s media. Staff are now busy organising filming opportunities for America’s ABC News Nightline – the USA version of Newsnight and Japan’s equivalent of the BBC – Nippon TV.
The coverage also prompted a response from a past student who had seen the feature on satellite TV from his home in Thailand. Captain James H Miller wrote to the Academy to say: "The programme was accurate and did you proud. |
|
He went on to praise the quality of the manned model course and its practical value, suggesting that it ought to be made mandatory for Masters and Pilots like himself: "I have now performed over 40 tandem berthings, and the lessons learned at Marchwood continue to serve me well. I operate in the Andaman Sea,
where the environmental forces are unpredictable and varied."
John Millican, Director of Warsash is delighted with the coverage and would like to thank everyone involved for the extra work they have put in to make it possible: "It's been hard work, but well worth it."
The opportunity to promote

Addressing shortages of expertise both ashore and afloat |
In almost every maritime journal published today there is reference to officer shortages, either now or in the future. There are also many references to fatigue, a condition that must be exacerbated by staff shortages.
